QCYC Goorangai and Eliza Ramsden Trophy Races 2024 precede Opening Day Celebrations

Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club will celebrate their 62nd anniversary Opening Day on Sunday 3 November 2024 with “Blessing of the Fleet” and the roar of the cannon as they break open the flags to declare the 2024-25 season open.

Keelboat sailors from around Port Phillip are invited to join the celebrations with a feeder passage race from Brighton to Queenscliff on Saturday 2 November, commemorating  the annual HMAS Goorangai Trophy Race and the recent Eliza Ramsden Trophy division for female helms.

The Goorangai race commemorates the tragic sinking of the minesweeper vessel HMAS Goorangai at the mouth of Port Phillip on 20 Nov 1940. A former crew member of the stricken vessel and QCYC member donated the trophy to honour his lost mates.

In 2022, QCYC’s first female Commodore Lee Renfree established the Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy (KISS) program for women by women, and also introduced the Eliza Ramsden Trophy as a female helm division of the Goorangai race to increase female participation and encourage more women to step up to helming.

Why not take advantage of the Melbourne Cup long weekend and jump on board for a great weekend of sailing, fun and camaraderie. Boats entered in the races have free berthing overnight on Saturday 2 November and all crew are invited to stay on for Sunday’s QCYC’s Opening Day festivities and luncheon.

Here are the steps to enter for the racing event -

  2. Fill out and submit the  QCYC Berthing Request form. (QCYC website).

  3. On confirmation of berthing allocation, proceed to  QCYC 2024-25 Wharfage to book and pay for overnight boat berthing and crew fee for staying overnight. (Try Booking).
